Spring/Summer Weather Policy
Extreme Heat and Humid Conditions
The Waunakee Village Center may require that activities be curtailed or cancelled when the heat and humidity are such that participants in vigorous activity for prolonged periods could be dangerous.
• Heat Index of 80-89 (Low to moderate risk)
Proceed with scheduled outdoor activity. Monitor participants carefully for necessary action. Encourage additional fluid intake.
• Heat Index of 90-104 (Moderate risk, use caution)
Fluid/shade/rest breaks will be encouraged. Activity could be modified for less exertion. Consider reducing program length. Programming staff has the discretion to cancel programs when conditions and the population served warrant additional caution.
• Heat Index of 105+ (Very high risk, cancel outdoor activities)
When the Heat Index is forecast to be 105 or greater at the start time of the scheduled activity, most outdoor programs will be cancelled. Discretion is granted to continue programs with abundant shade, water-based recreation or if breezy conditions are forecast for the time of the activity. Activities requiring less exertion should be moved to a shady, breezy, or cool area if at all possible.
Severe Weather Watches and Rain Events
Activities may be conducted as scheduled when severe weather watches or rain is forecast for the Village. However, if the weather is imminent, postponement or cancellation may take place, that call will be made by programming staff prior to the start of the activity whenever possible.
Programs and activities must be cancelled or suspended each time lighting is observed. A 30-minute return to play rule will be applied each time lightning is seen.
Severe Weather Warnings - Thunderstorms and Tornados
Outdoor activities will be canceled or postponed when a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued for the Village by the National Weather Service. Participants, spectators, and staff shall seek immediate shelter in the case of a severe weather warning.
Indoor activities may be conducted during a severe thunderstorm warning. However, during a tornado warning, participants, spectators, and staff shall seek immediate shelter in the designated storm shelter within the building.
