Few experiences in life can parallel the satisfaction one feels as a volunteer fire fighter. To know you are truly making a difference in someone else's life is ultimately part of the rush we seek. In addition, we work as a team, and the hard work coupled with the camaraderie makes for a pretty intense experience.

Like any organization, we must grow to meet the needs of the community that we serve. We pass on the experience, knowledge and trust to new members to fill our ranks. If you think you have what it takes, and can commit the time it takes to be involved, we would like very much to have your application.

Required Training

New members must, at the very least, complete the Entry Level Fire Fighter course offered by the Wisconsin Technical College system, which is a 60 hour class (usually meets once a week). The department highly encourages firefighters to continue in other advanced emergency / fire state certified courses and these are also paid for by the department.

The Waunakee Fire Department is staffed by 38 paid-on-call volunteers. WFD responds to approximately 250 calls per year, each averaging about an hour. Some calls can last several hours. We train as a department twice a month on Monday evenings (1st and 3rd Mondays of the month). In addition, we have a monthly meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month, for administrative and business purposes. Recognizing that this is a volunteer organization, we ask our members to commit and participate as much as their personal situation allows.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must live within the Village of Waunakee.
  • Preferred that you live within 4 minutes driving distance of the station to allow for prompt response.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Able to attend regular training (1st and 3rd Mondays) and meetings (2nd Mondays).
  • Have already taken or be able to take (at least) an Entry Level Firefighter Course (60 hour course)
  • Be physically and mentally able to take on the normal duties of a firefigther.
Hiring Process
Our bylaws dictate that we have no more than 38 active firefighter members at any given time. However, we occasionally have openings for new volunteers through attrition or retirements. If you are interested in membership, we encourage you to fill out an application immediately. We hold applications until the next available opening and call upon the list at that time. The process is as follows:
  1. Fill-out application.
  2. Wait until WFD has an opening. WFD will hold all applications until such time that an opening occurs.
  3. WFD will call applicants for a preliminary interview with the Chief and another company officer / representative.
  4. Those applicants who pass the Chief interview shall attend a designated WFD monthly meeting to introduce themselves and answer a few questions in front of the department members.
  5. All WFD members then vote on which applicants shall be granted Probationary Members.
  6. New members are probationary for 12 months. Certain membership and operational restrictions apply to probationary members.
  7. At the end of the 12 month probation period, WFD members vote on whether to admit the probationary members to full member status.
